Seventy years before the American League pennant winning (and eventual world champion) Red Sox became the talk of Boston, another team took Beantown by storm. Led by its pair of starting pitching aces Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain—immortalized in the pithy saying, "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain"—the Boston Braves captured the National League pennant in 1948. Although the team would ultimately fall in six games to the Cleveland Indians in the World Series, the franchise's second senior circuit title of the twentieth century was a truly unexpected pennant run. After going 19-19 over the first two months of the season, the '48 Braves went 72-43 the rest of the way, propelling them into the Fall Classic.

While Johnny Sain was traded to the Yankees three years later, Warren Spahn went on to establish himself as the greatest pitcher in Braves history—and that is no minor distinction considering Hall of Famers Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz all achieved tremendous success with the franchise. Offered here is a stunning example of Spahn's rookie card from that memorable 1948 campaign. Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA, this card exhibits high-end characteristics, including its perfect image registration and well-formed corners, which rank it as one of the top exemplars in its grade. PSA's Sports Market Report values this card at $2,900, although recent figures, including a $3,112 sale at a May 2018 Memory Lane auction, have exceeded this valuation. Only eight copies have ever graded higher than this PSA 8 beauty. No postwar pitcher has more career wins than Warren Spahn's 363. From Boston to Milwaukee to Cooperstown, Spahn was a legend of the game. Do not miss out on your opportunity to add this cardboard icon to your treasured personal collection.
